Noise practice activates neural control of the false folds and helps improve control of other parts, especially the true vocal folds and larynx.

My throat feels scratchy. Are there signs that I should stop rather than push through?
When you are unfamiliar with this movement or have limited control of other parts, the false or true folds can meet too strongly and cause pain. At first, keep practice to a few minutes and stop immediately if you feel itching or irritation. With a little practice each day, you will eventually be able to sustain it for tens of minutes to hours without pain.
